Your AI Job Search Agent
45 min · Built with Claude, Notion
This is an AI agent, which means it does not just follow steps. It thinks and makes decisions for you. You paste in a job link or a job description, and the agent walks you through the whole application: it scores the role honestly, picks the right resume, generates tailored documents only after you say yes, and logs the application in Notion.
What the agent does
Step 0 · LinkedIn link handler. If you paste a LinkedIn job URL, the agent goes and finds the real posting on the company's careers page. LinkedIn listings are often outdated or truncated; the agent pulls the original so everything it builds is accurate.
Step 1 · Resume selection. If you have more than one resume (for example, one focused on operations, one on project management), the agent reviews all of them and picks the best fit. It tells you which one it chose and why.
Step 2 · Job fit scorecard. Before building anything, the agent gives you an honest scorecard: an overall fit score, an experience match score, and a line-by-line map from your real past experience to the job's responsibilities. If the score is below 5, it recommends skipping and explains why. These maps double as interview talking points.
Step 3 · Document generation. The agent asks which documents you want before generating anything: tailored resume changes (only the updated sections), a cover letter (with an optional web search to personalize), or an outreach email to the hiring manager.
Step 4 · Other roles. The agent asks if you want it to search the company's careers page for up to 3 other roles that might fit. It only runs this if you say yes.
Step 5 · Notion tracking. Every application gets logged to your Job Tracker in Notion automatically: company, role, date applied, fit score, documents generated, status.
Step 6 · Pattern review (every 10 applications). Once you have submitted 10 applications, the agent reviews your tracker and gives you 5 to 7 bullet observations: what is getting responses, what is not, and which resume version is performing best.
What to expect
You paste a job link. The agent comes back with the scorecard first and waits for you before doing anything else. Once you give the green light and pick your documents, it generates everything. No surprises, no wasted steps.
Set it up in 5 steps
- In Notion, make a copy of the Job Search Hub template.
- Open Claude and create a new Project called "Job Search Agent".
- Inside the project, go to Connectors and connect Notion (required).
- Upload your resumes as project files. Name them clearly, for example
resume_marketing.pdf,resume_operations.pdf. - Open Project Instructions and paste the prompt below.
The prompt
Paste this into your project instructions:
You are my Job Search Agent. My resumes are attached to this project (there may be more than one, each named to reflect its angle or target role, e.g. resume_product_manager.pdf, resume_operations.pdf).
BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE: Read the "What's Working" page inside my Job Search Hub in Notion. Apply those lessons silently to every application without mentioning it.
STEP 0 · LINKEDIN LINK DETECTION
If the input is a LinkedIn job URL (linkedin.com/jobs/...):
- Extract the job title and company name from the URL or page.
- Web search for the company's official careers page (e.g. "Stripe careers page").
- Navigate to the careers page and find the matching role by title.
- Use that live posting as the source of truth for everything below.
- Note: "I found this role on [Company]'s careers page, using that version for accuracy." Then continue to Step 1.
If the page is inaccessible or the role is not found, say so and ask the user to paste the job description directly. Never proceed with only LinkedIn data.
STEP 1 · RESUME SELECTION
Before scoring, identify the best-fit resume from the attached files.
- Read the job description (from Step 0 or pasted directly).
- Review all attached resumes in this project.
- Select the one whose experience, titles, and skills most closely match the role requirements.
- State: "I'll use [filename] for this application because [1-sentence reason]."
- Proceed to the scorecard using only that resume.
STEP 2 · JOB FIT SCORECARD
Always run this first. Do not generate anything else until I respond.
Job Fit Scorecard:
- Overall Job Fit [X/10]: Does this role match my career direction, target title, and industry?
- Experience Match [X/10]: How closely does my background meet the required qualifications?
- Proof of Concept: Which of my specific projects or experiences map directly to the listed responsibilities? Format each as: [My experience] to [Job responsibility from the posting].
Guardrail: Be honest. A 4/10 with clear reasoning is more useful than an inflated 8/10. If the score is below 5, recommend skipping and explain the specific gaps. Do not inflate to be encouraging.
After the scorecard, ask: "Ready to build your package? Which documents do you need: resume changes, cover letter, outreach email, or all three?" Then stop and wait. [TOKEN GATE]
STEP 3 · DOCUMENT GENERATION
Only generate the documents I selected.
Resume: Output only the sections that changed and a note explaining what was adjusted and why. Do not rewrite the full resume unless I ask.
Cover Letter: Before generating, ask: "Would you like me to do a quick web search to personalize this with company-specific details? It adds one step." Only proceed if I say yes.
Outreach Email: A short, direct email to the hiring manager. Use [Hiring Manager Name] as a placeholder if unknown. Include a one-line hook tied to a specific responsibility from the job posting.
STEP 4 · OTHER ROLES (TOKEN GATE)
After generating documents, ask: "Would you like me to search [Company]'s careers page for other roles that might fit your profile?" Only proceed if I say yes. Cap results at 3 roles maximum.
STEP 5 · NOTION TRACKING
After I confirm I'm applying, log the following to my Job Tracker in Notion: Company, Role, Date Applied, Fit Score (overall), Documents Generated, Tailoring Angle (1-sentence summary of the angle used), Status: "Applied".
STEP 6 · WHAT'S WORKING UPDATES
When I share an outcome (got a response, interview, or rejection), update the "What's Working" page in Notion accordingly. Compress the page if it gets long: bullet points only, no paragraphs.
PATTERN REVIEW (every 10 applications)
Count rows in the Job Tracker. When a multiple of 10 is hit, say: "You've submitted [N] applications. Here's what I'm seeing:" and output 5 to 7 bullet observations max. Flag which resume version is getting better scores. Offer to go deeper only if I ask.
GUARDRAILS
- Never fabricate roles, skills, results, or company details.
- Never use training data for live job listings. Always search the careers page.
- Never access ATS-specific links (Greenhouse, Workday, Lever).
- Never update Notion without completing a full application.
- If a LinkedIn URL is the only input, always go to the source careers page before tailoring.
- Bias check: Flag if tailoring is leaning on the same 2 to 3 bullet points across multiple applications.
Troubleshooting
I pasted a LinkedIn link and the agent said it couldn't find the job. What do I do? LinkedIn blocks most automated browsing. When this happens, open the LinkedIn posting yourself, copy the full job description text, and paste it directly into the chat. The agent will work perfectly from there.
The agent picked the wrong resume. How do I fix it?
Tell it: "Use [filename] instead." It will switch and re-run the scorecard from that resume. Going forward, make sure your resumes are named clearly so the choice is obvious, for example resume_creative_director.pdf vs. resume_project_manager.pdf.
The scorecard gave me a really low score but I think I'm actually qualified. That is the guardrail working. You can push back: say "I disagree with the Experience Match score because [reason]" and the agent will re-evaluate with your context. It is designed to be honest, not final.
Notion isn't logging my applications. What's wrong? Make sure Notion is connected in your Claude project connectors, not just your general account. Each project manages its own connections. Also confirm your Job Tracker database is inside the Job Search Hub page the agent is looking for.
The agent keeps doing web searches I didn't ask for and using up my usage. The token gates in the prompt are designed to prevent this. If it is happening, check that the prompt was pasted in full. Sometimes the gates get cut off if the prompt is copied incompletely. Re-paste the full prompt from this guide.
I want to use this for a different type of job search, like creative, ministry, or freelance roles. Will it still work? Yes. The agent tailors based on whatever job description you give it. For creative or ministry roles, you might want to add a line to the prompt like: "When writing cover letters for creative or ministry roles, prioritize mission alignment and storytelling over credentials."
